Dyfed FHS Information

The Society was founded in 1982 to encourage and assist people in all parts of the world who are pursuing family history research relative to Dyfed which comprises the old counties of Carmarthen, Pembroke and Cardigan. The Society also welcomes into membership those living within the counties who have no Dyfed ancestry but are interested in family history generally.

Contact with other societies is maintained through the Federation of Family History Societies and the Association of Family History Societies of Wales.

Yearly meetings involving speakers of national standing in the fields of family history, local history and heraldry are held in Carmarthen. Regular meetings with talks on a wide range of subjects, as well as members' evenings, are arranged in each of the Society's six branches. The executive committee of the Society meets six times a year in Carmarthen.

A members' journal is published periodically and is free to all members. The journal keeps members in touch with Society affairs and with family history matters generally. It also enables members to contact others pursuing similar interests.

Project work, such as transcribing Census Returns, Parish Registers, and Monumental Inscriptions, is undertaken by the Society. The bulk of this work is carried out within the branches.

Each branch maintains a small lending library and also holds for sale a stock of publications of interest to members.
