Dyfed Towns

Evocative descriptions of towns, identified on the map of the counties, can be found in old travel guides, trade directories and postcards. These are an important source of information, to the family researcher, as building and transportation schemes can radically alter their appearance. The OS map reference, in brackets, and Welsh name are given beside each town below. The National Grid Reference System uses grid letters to identify each 100 kilometre square in the United Kingdom. Within these are eastings and northings expressed in numbers; single numbers represent 10km, double numbers represent 1km, and so on. On this website, towns are identified to the nearest 1km and churches to the nearest 100 metres. The location within the county, using the grid reference, can be identified from the map which will appear in a separate browser window. At the top of each town page is an extract from an 1869 map of South Wales, by Black of Edinburgh, with links to old postcards at the bottom. You can return to the Dyfed Index, on the Gazetteer Menu, with the first link.
