Spotlight on Upper Towy Valley

Spotlight on Upper Towy Valley

Urdd Eisteddfod held in Llandovery

The Urdd National Eisteddfod was held in Llandovery for the first time ever. It was held on local farming land that was within walking distance of the town itself.  The people of Llandovery and the surrounding villages had made a huge effort in decorating everywhere to welcome people to Llandovery.

The eisteddford was held from Monday 29th May until Saturday June 3rd, so the research hub was open for the whole week from 10am – 4pm.  We were busy everyday with visitors from all parts of Wales, as well as the usual tourists, due to it being a bank holiday and half term week for the schools.  We did a wonderful display in the museum window, with eisteddfod chairs, crowns and photographs that had been won previously by local people.

The gazebo was put up everyday, outside the museum, which was a great help to display more research items that we have in the hub.

I,d like to say a HUGE, HUGE thank you to all members of the Upper Towy Valley Branch, who volunteered all week in the research hub, it,s lovely to meet people from all parts of Britain, and vistitors from abroad, and that we are able to help them with their family research, or find a school photograph with family members in, or find the location of a family grave.

A very enjoyable week, but a very tiring week!!

DIOLCH o galon I bawb gwnaeth helpu yn ystod yr wythnos.

The June 2023 branch report was too large to fit all of it in the August 2023 Journal and none of the pictures were included so the full report and the photos are included in the file below.

Heritage Centre in Llandovery

The Upper Towy Valley Family History branch has a room in the museum for a Family History Research Centre, with exhibitions of historical photographs, family trees and research material on display. We are open for research for two days each week – Wednesdays and Fridays – from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and have a rota of volunteers so that someone is always on hand to help enquirers in their research. We have a number of records and documents available for people to consult such as census returns, parish records, memorial inscriptions from churches, chapels and cemeteries, tithe records and a variety of books, magazines and miscellaneous records pertaining to Llandovery and a wide surrounding area.
